Work on existing golf courses comes in all varieties and scales. The rationale behind the work for each course can be incredibly varied. The basic premise behind renovating or restoring a golf course is very simply predicated on need; the need to improve, the need to repair or replace, to develop a stronger identity, to create more balance and enjoyment or to simply prepare a course so that it may go on living. One thing is certain: every golf course, over time, inevitably pines for some type of refurbishment or adjustment. As our game has certainly evolved, so must our golf courses.
Throughout my career, I've had the pleasure and privelege of working on more than a few Golden Age classics, reinstating and adapting the works of such notable names as C.H. Alison, Tom Bendelow, H.S. Colt, William Flynn, Willie Park, Jr., Donald Ross and Mackenzie Ross among others. It is impactful to honor the original architecture and specific design intentions of these architectural masters while also being responsive to the influences and evolution of our fine game.
As I take on renovation work, I am always reminded of and inspired by a statement made by H.S. Colt, "The real test of a course - is it going to live?"
Renovation work allows me the enjoyment of working with clients to identify and prioritize what is essential to THEIR continued success and then develop clearly laid plans to address or remedy those requirements. Whether surgical or comprehensive, grand or a phased approach, the outcomes are inherently important to me. Words like TIMELESS, LASTING and ENDURING are also important to me as vital measurements of the work we execute and the results we yearn to achieve.
