My Daily Journal from England
Recently my marketing manager (wife) remarked to me that I have not been diligent with my blogging efforts… and she is right (she’s always right). And to her credit, she suggested that I post daily blogs during my upcoming tour of England’s finest golf courses – just check in with some details from the day and from the golf courses I visit. That sounded like a great idea to me (and also why she makes the big bucks!).
So, beginning next Sunday (September 13th) I will endeavor to post journal entries on my blog for those who care to follow along. This will cover a ten-day trip as I join nearly 80 other golf course architects representing Europe, Australia and the US. This “To Heath & Links” study tour was organized by the European Institute of Golf Course Architects.
We’ll be visiting Herbert Fowler’s, The Berkshire as well as the work of Harry Colt and Willie Park, Jr. at Sunningdale. Then we’ll depart the heathlands of Surrey for the southern coast. There we’ll visit Royal St. George’s and Royal Cinque Ports (aka Deal). At that point, most of the group will scatter – and I’ll be joining fellow American architect Richard Mandell on a self-guided junket of our own which will include the hallowed links of St. Enodoc and then a return back to the London area for rounds at Walton Heath (Fowler), Swinley Forest (Colt), St. George’s Hill (Colt) and Huntercombe (Park, Jr.). We may even stop off at a few more gems along the way.
I hope to capture some enlightening images to share as well as colorful accounts of the journey and our destination golf experiences. This is a trip I have longed to take and expect to return back to my work here full of energy and inspiration. So check back daily, beginning on 9/13.
Cheers!
Drew
